Boosting Spells: You roll 4 to cast Fireball (4 Effort, 4 damage to all in area). You spend 6 more Mana to boost it to 10 Effort (10 damage to all). Fortunes and Follys in Magic: Fortune (1): Spell succeeds with 20 Effort but only costs 1 Mana!  Folly (20): Spell fails catastrophically - GM describes magical backlash The Casting Process: 1. Declare your spell and target 2. Roll d20 against your casting skill (Magic or Miracles) 3. If successful (roll ≤ skill):  The spell works  Your roll = Effort (spell's power)  Spend Mana = Effort 4. If failed (roll > skill):  Spell fizzles  No Mana spent  Your action is wasted
