Starting out, a typical character has 10-15 HP. A typical weapon deals 6-12 damage. A measley 2HD monster does 15 HP damage. Do the math - combat is over fast, one way or another.

  • Smart positioning (Fast or Slow phase?)
  • Resource management (When to Second Wind?)
  • Defensive choices (Parry, dodge, or hope your armor holds?)
  • Knowing when to run (First flee is painful, third is catastrophic) During combat, on your turn, you take a single action.
